William Whitehead

Welcome to the website of William Whitehead, concert organist and accompanist. The following pages give some information about my activities, plus details of how to contact me.

‘King of Instruments’, or so Mozart said, but ‘King of Musical Instruments’ is the level that this organist strives for! Passionate about making the pipe organ a real and vibrant musical experience, William presents concerts, masterclasses and other events, all beamed towards making music come alive on this, the most mechanical of all instruments.

First-prize winner at the Odense International Organ Competition, Denmark, in 2004, William has established a reputation for engaging and inspiring playing. His disc, 'Dances of Life and Death', music by Duruflé and Alain, was awarded a Diapason Découverte in Diapason magazine and 5-star reviews elsewhere. He is now sought after as a recitalist, teacher, examiner and jury member.

*NEWS*

William deputises for Martin Baker again this month, conducting the choir of Westminster Cathedral. A pleasure and privilege to stand in front of this golden choir. Did you hear their wonderful Midnight Mass broadcast?

William is looking forward to travelling to North America in March for some concerts and will be giving a masterclass at UCLA. A first ever trip to the West Coast!

A recording on the 1723 Jordan organ, recently restored by Manders, situated in West London, will happen later this year. Now the search for repertoire......Blow, Purcell, Pepusch, Adams, methinks......

The microphones are out again! This time in May, with the Maitrise of Toulouse, conducted by Mark Opstad. The disc will be called 'Missa brevis', and will include the premiere recording of Missa Cornelia by Kenneth Leighton. Recording venue still to be confirmed, but it looks like the Temple du Salin.
